On her appointment as the first UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital Pediatric Emergency Medicine Endowed Professor. Dr. Grupp-Phelan currently serves the chief of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) at both UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals (San Francisco and Oakland) and as the department’s vice chair for Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Grupp-Phelan previously served as the Director of Research and the Richard Ruddy and Barbara Wriston Ruddy Endowed Chair for Pediatric Research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for two decades before coming to UCSF in 2017. Dr. Grupp-Phelan has a long history of conducting mental health research within the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) setting. She is nationally recognized for her research contributions focused on the adolescent population presenting to the emergency department with unmet or unrecognized mental health needs, and engaging teens at high risk for suicidal events into mental health services. She is currently the Hospital Emergency Department Affiliate (HEDA) Principal Investigator for the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN). Dr. Grupp-Phelan is a passionate advocate for promoting the mental health, safety, and wellness of ill and injured children in the Bay Area and throughout the nation.
